Transform your tiles with pencil, tortillon and a little bit of magic ✨

The 6th step of the Zentangle method is Shading.

Shading is the thing that takes a Zentangle tile from beautiful, to breathtaking. It adds depth, dimension and that wow factor that makes people stop and say - "did you actually draw that?!"

And yet, it's the part many people feel intimidated by. They rush through, or just sit staring blankly at a tile wondering where to start.

If you've ever looked at a finished tile and felt like something was missing - a little bit of help with shading might just be what transforms your tiles from feeling flat, to looking fabulous.

Maybe you've tried shading before and it all ended up looking, just grey.

Maybe you're not sure which pencil to use, or where on the tile to even start.

Maybe you worry about adding too much and ruining what you've already drawn - because let's be honest, picking up a pencil and putting graphite over line work you've spent ages on can be a little nerve-wracking.

Perhaps you've found yourself staring at a finished tile, pencil in hand, and just... not adding any shading. Because you're not sure what the result will look like, and it feels safer to leave it as it is.

I know that feeling. When I first started shading, it felt too "arty" - like something that proper artists did, and that I was going to get wrong. I was so tentative about adding graphite that I'd barely touch the tile with the pencil. It took time, practice, and someone actually showing me the how and the why before it started to click.

That's exactly what this course is here to do for you.

So what is The Art of Shading in Zentangle?

It's a brand new online course from Ivy's Corner that walks you through everything you need to know about shading - from understanding your pencils, to building layers, to trying out different techniques on real tiles alongside me.

By the end, you'll know where to shade, how much to add, how to make elements pop off the page, and how to give your work a whole new dimension. Most importantly, you'll pick up that pencil with confidence - every single time.

Here's a little of what we'll cover together in this brand new course:

  • Why shading works and what the Zentangle Method actually says about it - including how it differs from shading in traditional art
  • Pencil grades explained in plain English - and exactly which ones to use and why
  • How to hold your pencil and use a tortillon properly, so your shading stays smooth and controlled
  • The core principles - highlights, shadows, knowing where to start and when to stop
  • Several full tile projects, each exploring different shading techniques

No complicated rules. No expensive equipment. No worrying that you're doing it wrong. Just clear, calm, step-by-step guidance you can follow at your own pace, in your own time.

Ready to finally feel confident with shading?

Who is your Instructor?

Hi, I'm Becky - a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT 41) based in Hertfordshire, UK, and the founder of Ivy's Corner.

I came to Zentangle through my mum, who was also a Certified Zentangle Teacher, and it's been a part of my life and my creative practice ever since. Teaching it - and watching people discover just how much they're capable of - is one of my favourite things in the world.

Before Ivy's Corner, I ran a wedding photography business for over ten years, so I understand creativity, pressure, and the particular kind of joy that comes from making something with your hands. These days I teach online courses, run a monthly Zentangle membership, and create content to help people find their way back to creativity - no matter how long it's been, or how "unarty" they think they are.

My approach is calm, beginner-friendly and completely judgement-free. I'm not here to make art feel complicated. I'm here to show you that it doesn't have to be.
